5 Tips to Maintain Long, Fine Color-Treated Hair

For as long as I can remember, I always have been identified by my hair – I was (and still am) “that” girl with the long, straight blonde locks. So from an early age, my mom taught me how to properly care for and treat my hair so it stays in pristine condition.

Since many of you often ask about my hair, I thought I would share five tidbits of my best personal hair advice.

Visit the salon regularly.
The term regularly is going to depend on your needs and hair type. On average, I see my hairdresser every two months – by this time, my color is grown out with harsh roots showing, and my ends always need some cleaning up. Even though I’m still trying to grow my hair a few inches longer, I have my ends dusted every salon visit to get rid of any dead ends and to encourage new growth. And, before you have any drastic color changes done, make sure you have a lengthy and detailed consultation with your stylist to discuss any possible damage it could cause to your hair, as well as the required upkeep on your end – they are the experts, so use them to their fullest capabilities.

Only wash your hair when necessary.
This is going to solely depend on your hair type and texture, but I typically only wash my hair two to three times a week at most – yes, even on my workout days! Your hair needs those natural oils to keep it hydrated and healthy, and with color-treated hair, the less you wash means the longer that your color will stay fresh. When I do wash my hair, I rotate between a purple shampoo (I have been loving this inexpensive option) and a shampoo/conditioner combo that’s safe for color-treated hair. Lately, I’ve been reaching for the Kenra Platinum Revive Shampoo and Conditioner that’s not only safe on my blonde hair, but it also helps to strengthen and revive any dead strands or ends that I might have.

Use a hair mask once a week.
Since dry shampoo is my best weapon of defense in between washes, my hair can start to get weighed-down and a little dry from all the product. Since I will never give up dry shampoo, using a hair mask once a week has helped restore moisture and shine to my hair. The Kenra Platinum Revive Treatment Strengthening Masque has a thick, creamy texture that can be left in anywhere from five to 15 minutes. I’ve seen a noticeable difference in the smoothness of my hair since I’ve put this product into my regular hair routine.

“Treat” your hair daily.
I mean treat literally and in the figurative sense here. Since my hair is fine and I have a lot of it, I always have suffered from horrible knots and tangles after the shower. My solution? Leave-in conditioners and/or treatments, as well as my recent love affair with hair oils. The Kenra Platinum Revive Complex Leave-In Fortifier has been my go-to as of late – you smooth two to three pumps of the product into damp hair from mid-shaft to ends, and your hair is left smooth and knot-free. Once my hair is dry – whether air-dryed or from styling – I also use a couple pumps of the Kenra Platinum Revive Oil Intense Strengthening Oil to further smooth my ends and protect against the natural elements throughout the day. The personal treat in all this besides protecting and strengthening your hair? These products smell ah-mazing, and the scent typically lingers all day long.

Keep heat styling to a minimum.
I know this is easier said than done, but not blasting the blow dryer or reaching for the curling iron daily makes a huge difference in the appearance and health of your hair. Since I work from home, I can get away with not having my hair “done” everyday – I try to limit my heat styling to three or less times a week, and that usually only includes the blow dryer on max speed at the medium heat setting. If you do feel the need to heat style your hair more often, always use a heat protectant (this drugstore option is my favorite) and try turning down the temperature on your tools – the lower temperature on your curling iron will result in those loose, beachy waves we all always lust after!

None of these tips are rocket science, but they have served me well over
the years and always lead to multiple comments from people I know and
strangers at the store, as well as glowing reviews from all my
hairdressers about how healthy my hair looks and feels.

  • These are great tips, thank you for sharing!! I only wash my hair once a week. This is also going to sound nuts, but I seriously only go to the salon once a year. I let it grow out all winter and then brighten things up for the spring and summer. My hair is thick too and now it is starting to feel heavy which means its time haha. 🙂

I wish I could get away with not washing my hair every day, but if I don’t I have no style! I’m interested in those Kenra products and the Clairol, too. Your hair is looking really pretty these days!

  • Great tips! I’ve been dying to try a hair mask.

The Kendra shine spray is my favorite!! Your hair is so so gorgeous!!

  • I’m with you on working from home and not having to style it every day. It’s really helped me hair too! These Kendra products sound great!

  • Your hair always looks amazing! I need to start using a mask once a week, and I need to get better about seeing my stylist every 2 months instead of 3-4. I have an appointment next week, and it’s wayyyy overdue!

I think these are all great tips. I want to get to the point where I dont wash my hair every day. It’s just that in between period is so hard!

    • I know, you almost have to train your hair to not be washed everyday. It took me a few years to get used to it, but now I can’t imagine it any other way.

  • Yes to all these tips! I will admit I go pretty long between my salon appointments but my stylist always says my hair is in good condition for being fine and bleached so I feel like it’s all good! I’ve heard a lot about the Kenra hairspray/dry shampoo but never any of their in/after shower products. I’ve been on the hunt for a higher end shampoo/conditioner to work into my routine since my Pureology buy from last year was a big fail!

    • You definitely should give these products a try – I think you would love them! You’re so lucky that your hair always looks that good and you can go longer between salon visits!

  • I have color treated hair that was dry to begin with and I only wash and use heat tools on my hair once a week now. It is amazing how far dry shampoo can carry you! Great tips!

    • I agree, it makes such a difference when you cut back on washing and heat styling. And, yes to dry shampoo!

I always kind of identify people by their hair too! Obviously I am known as the curly girl!

  • Although I don’t trim mine with every visit, I agree with all these! I swear by the Shimmer Lights shampoo. I always switch up my shampoos but I have always love any Kenra product I’ve ever tried. – Leah Chasing Texas

  • Nadine

I have never tried the Kenra products so I will have to check them out. My hair is super fine and colored as well. I need to get better about doing masks weekly!

  • Totally agree with regular salon visits – I started going every 3 months like clockwork for trims a couple of years ago and it has made the biggest difference! I honestly feel like my hair grows faster because of it. And I want to try that hair mask! It sounds great!

    • I agree! Plus, I look forward to my salon days since that’s about the extent of personal time I get these days, lol. The hair mask is fantastic!

  • I’ve recently gotten into hair masks- and they’ve really helped my hair! While mine isn’t fine (lol, totally the opposite), it’s very dry and needs all the moisture it can get!

  • Your hair is always so gorgeous and looks like you came from the salon, so you definitely know what you’re talking about! If I ever get brave enough to color my hair- or have someone other than myself cut it again, I will definitely circle back to this post!

    • You are so sweet, thank you! You’re lucky that your hair isn’t colored and still looks that gorgeous.

  • Christina Sotherden

Your hair always looks the best! Also, I am completely loving this look!

    • Thanks, girlfriend! These were “outtakes” from Monday’s post, but they ended up working with this, too!

  • Oh wow – I didn’t even know a hair mask existed! Must try one. 🙂
