Life Lately

Hello, hello! It’s great to be back – it’s amazing what a few days off can do for your mind and overall attitude. We enjoyed Ryan’s vacation last week to the fullest, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bummed this morning that it’s time to get back to our normal routine. But, in an effort to keep the memories alive, I’m sharing a few highlights of what we were up to last week and what life lately has looked like around here.

Redoing our front yard landscaping was our main project for a better part of the week as I mentioned in this post, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. I couldn’t find any decent before pictures, but to give you a better idea of what we did, we ripped out four evergreen bushes and another huge bush next to the garage, tons of day lilies,  ground cover, more weeds than you can imagine, and hauled away nearly 20 wheelbarrows-full of decorative rock. We now have boxwood and spirea shrubs and a limelight hydrangea bush that I can’t wait to watch bloom, and we opted for fresh cedar mulch instead of rock. Curb appeal goes a long way, people!

We had the opportunity to really immerse ourselves in our local community all throughout the week, which I’m happy we finally were able to do. I think I’ve mentioned this before – we haven’t had the easiest time assimilating into our town, but if you take the time to look around, there actually is quite a bit to do! We took Finn to his first farmer’s market, caught fireworks lakeside for the 4th, and visited the cutest ice cream shop/farm with beautiful views and the most delicious ice cream I think that I’ve ever had.

As you already know from my what to wear to an outdoor summer concert post, we headed down to Milwaukee for Summerfest! We actually ended up going twice this year (more on that in a minute), and first up was Alabama Shakes and Chris Stapleton. I wasn’t too familiar with Alabama Shakes, but holy cow – that girl can sing. I was blown away by her talent. Chris Stapleton was exactly how I thought he would be – he’s an incredible musician and sounded just as good live, if not better, than he does on his recorded tracks.

And that brings me to our second Summerfest experience. Fun fact – I am a diehard Beatles fan. They are my favorite band of all time, and my family calls me the walking Beatles encyclopedia. I even took a whole college course on just The Beatles and their history! So, when I found out that Paul McCartney was going to be at Summerfest this year, I just knew we had to try and go. Tickets sold out right away back in April, so we kept a close eye on Stubhub, and tickets got low enough that we were able to justify spending the money. Granted they were lawn seats, but hey, I’ll take it!

My brother also was able to come with us, so this is where we started the night. Actually, I was pretty happy with where we ended up on the lawn. We could see everything, and I was able to bring a picnic blanket so we had room to spread out and move around.

But then, only two or three songs into the set, one of the crew members came up to me and asked how many people I was with. He then handed me three new tickets and said, “You’ve just been upgraded.” Of course, being me, I was like “are you serious? Where?” And just super nonchalantly, the guy goes, “Oh, the red seats in the front section.” No joke, I could’ve cried. I proceeded to tell the guy that he was my hero, and the three of us grabbed all our stuff and practically ran down to our new seats.

This is where we ended up for the night – not bad, huh?

Life Lately Life Lately

I officially can check seeing Paul McCartney in concert off my bucket list, and the fact that I now have that story to go with it makes it that much more memorable. It was an incredible night of music, and it’s not something I’ll soon forget – I actually can’t stop listening to The Beatles albums now, the music is stuck in my head! I also apologize to everyone for my horrible singing/yelling on Snapchat during Hey Jude …

On a side note, a lot of progress also was made in the kitchen, so I’m going to dedicate a whole post to a progress update. Stay tuned for that later this week!

How was your short week last week? Get up to anything fun?

I just love exploring the area that I live in, and actually making use out of it. Your yard looks great, too! Send your landscaping skills my way:)

    • Right?! That actually is the second time that’s happened to me at a concert, the first being when I was 13 at N’Sync’s farewell tour and we ended up getting 3rd row seats. I’ll never forget that either! The landscaping was so much work, but at least I don’t feel bad about not hitting the gym this week. 🙂

I was totally watching your Snapchats of the Chris Stapleton concert and my husband was asking why I was listening to him! He sounds so good live! And that’s so awesome that you got upgraded at the Paul McCartney concert! Talk about a dream come true for you!

I completely understand what you mean about Paul. I just love the Beatles, my mom was a huge fan and I think I inherited it from her. I had the chance to see Paul last year and was blown away – he still sounds amazing and was a joy to see live. Embarrassingly, I actually got emotional when he first walked out on stage! How cool that your seats were upgraded like that!

ok i had to comment…i too used to be a lifelong die hard beatles fan…like the crazy kind that goes to conventions..i know. tomorrow we are going to see him in philly, and i am super excited. i have dreams of being given upgraded seats, so i am super jealous but also super thrilled for you. that’s awesome. i’ve been listening to the beatles nonstop these past few weeks to submerse myself in my old loves, and i know that i will cry when he sings hey jude. bucket list is being part of a hey jude singalong, and i can’t wait.

    • Well, you definitely won’t be disappointed with the Hey Jude singalong. Something I’ll never forget. Enjoy!

  • Sounds like you had a great vacation! Your landscaping looks great! So glad you all were able to spend some time in your community and found new things to enjoy there!

  • Your house is beautiful! Job well done on the landscaping 🙂 and it sounds like Lady Luck was on your side…how exciting to get upgraded!

  • Nothing like a sick day to catch up with your favourite bloggers! I’m seriously in love with your property, those hydrangeas will look so beautiful out front. My future in-laws have them across their front walk and they stay looking great from spring all the way into fall! They’re actually also going to see Paul McCartney when he’s in Toronto next week and I’m so jealous! I definitely find that it always seems like we’re either sticking around home or travelling outside the city on weekends, but I love doing a stay-cation in the summer just to check out local things I never think to explore! Those views look so pretty!

  • oh i’m glad you were able to enjoy his week off work, and see more around town. it can be really hard to do things around town, even when there is lots to do.. i know that sounds silly, but seriously it can be so easy to just stay at home or do only the barest of things. i’ve lived in my city for 4+ years and still haven’t done a whole lot. anyway. the landscaping looks great!! i have hydrangeas at the front of my house and i just love them.
