Fall Layers are a Midwest Girl’s Best Friend

Fall in the Midwest is undoubtedly the nicest and prettiest time of year. From the changing colors of the leaves to still-warm sunny days to cool, brisk evenings, there’s nothing standing in our way of wrapping up in a blanket scarf and grabbing a Starbucks PSL (which, by the way, I still have yet to do. #winning). However, where I live in Northern Wisconsin, the weather also can be a tad temperamental during the season. One minute it’s 60 F and sunny, and the next it’s back up to 80 F with 89% humidity. Since Mother Nature can’t make up her mind some days, fall layers are a Midwest girl’s best friend.

I was in Old Navy a couple weeks ago to look for a few new staple pieces to add to my fall wardrobe. I, of course, gravitated toward all the neutral pieces in creamy whites and subtle browns/taupes. Since we aren’t quite ready for heavy coats and sweaters, I rely on lightweight layers. Long cardigans are my version of a fall jacket. They provide enough warmth when needed but also don’t make me too warm during the day.

My other secret weapon? A scarf. Scarves are the ultimate accessory – they serve a purpose, but they also finish an outfit and can provide a pop of color or pattern to an otherwise neutral look. This floral scarf quickly has become a favorite – the fall-colored hues make it a perfect transition piece. Plus, it’s probably about time that I start to add some color to my wardrobe.

Also, can I cue up the hallelujah chorus that it’s finally jeans weather?! I’ve never been so happy in my life.

Anybody else like me and love seeing different styles from different states? Old Navy recently launched their #50Styles50States campaign where they teamed up with 50 bloggers across the U.S. to showcase how where a person is from influences their personal style – such as my friend Alissa representing Kansas (get it, girl!). Want to get in on the fun? Visit People.com, and submit your own state-inspired look!

How does where you’re from or where you live influence your style?
