Our Neutral Christmas Sitting Room

Happy Monday! This weekend can be summed up in one word – snow! Talk about an instant boost to get in the holiday spirit. You know what else currently fills my heart with holiday cheer? Our neutral Christmas sitting room! What used to be the most-despised room in the house (you can check out my previous design ideas here and here) quickly has turned into my favorite spot to open a book and curl up with Finn.

Let’s take a quick look at the before situation of this room. As you already know, our front sitting room is one large room that opens to our dining room. So, the sitting room area is the area up by the big window.

It cracks me up to look back at these photos of right after we moved in. Talk about crap everywhere! As you can see, this room was much of the same as the rest of the house – sterile semi-gloss walls, dark trim, carpet, etc.

And, here it is today – painted, new furniture, and ready for Christmas!

Oh, paint and new floors – how I love, thee.

The layout of this room really had me stumped for a long time. We toyed around with the idea of having all chairs, and then we changed our minds to include a loveseat instead. I quickly realized that where I originally thought I wanted the loveseat wasn’t going to work. I spent a good week or so moving the furniture into different configurations until I came up with one that I liked best.

Our big front window always has been my favorite feature of the room, so I wanted to place the loveseat opposite so you can see out. Plus, the loveseat now also acts as a visual space divider between the sitting room and dining room. We have nothing but good things to say about the IKEA Ektorp slipcover loveseat. Yes, it can be challenging to not be OCD about keeping the cover clean, especially since that’s Finn’s favorite spot. But, hey – at least I can just pop off the cover and wash it when I want instead of trying to spot clean it.

So many of you commented on our chairs when I shared our new room inspiration. For the price, I was a tad skeptical about how comfortable they would be and the quality. Well, we were blown away and absolutely love these chairs! They are so, so comfortable, and the included pillow helps add some back support. (I’ll probably switch those out in the future).

My favorite decor piece in the room is the botanical watercolor print that I balanced with two small vases from Magnolia Market. The kind folks at Minted gifted the watercolor print to us, and it’s special to have such a unique piece in this space. I’m not typically an art person, but the muted colors and pattern of this print fit in perfectly with our decor. I added the distressed french farmhouse frame to it, which only helps tie it in with the rest of our house. It’s a work of art that I will forever cherish!

We’re going back and forth on adding a sofa table behind the loveseat, I want to find a different lamp (the one in there now was what we had in the basement), and the walls still need a few more pieces. But for now, I love the calm and tranquility that the room brings.

  • So there’s a good chance I’m emailing this to my husband right now to prove that white is a perfect color for decorating- I LOVE this! Girl, your house must be a breathe of fresh are to walk into. This looks absolutely perfect to curl up with a book:)

    • Haha, I hope this convinces your husband for your sake! 🙂 Just tell him that slipcovers are key … a quick wash is all you need to keep it looking fresh! And, yes – it is my favorite room to read in now. It’s just so cozy and calming.

I love the way this room turned out, it looks so soft and so, so pretty. Every element is just perfect, and of course I love your tree! What a transformation!

  • Absolutely gorgeous! I love that the tree is the focal point of the room. And can we talk about how pretty the decor is in that room? I love that rug! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

    • Thanks, girl! It is fun to have the tree be the focal point right now. My favorite is being able to see it all lit up at night from outside the house!

  • Wow, you guys did so much with this room. It’s beautiful! So simple and classic. The tree looks beautiful in there!

  • Love the way that your sitting turned out and all of the beautiful Christmas decorations too! Everything just really seems to fit together perfectly, and I love those chairs so much! After a red wine spill this weekend, I think that I’d be pretty hesitant about getting anything light colored for our house. I’m just too clumsy!

    • Haha, I know the feeling! I think if we end up with lighter furniture in our family room at some point that I would stick with the slipcovers for that reason.

  • Gorgeous! I’m in love with those tufted chairs <3

  • This room gives me all my pinterest dreams and feels. The day I get to paint walls you know I will be hitting you up! That is the most perfect grey/white ever.

  • Your transformations are incredible! It looks so great!

  • I don’t think I’ll ever convince my husband not to get a real tree and we don’t really have room for more than one tree, but I LOVE that type of tree! You guys did an amazing job putting this room together, I love how much the white furniture pops!

    • I never thought I would like a flocked tree, but it does look so pretty in this room! I think you can just buy flocked branches if you want to stick a few in your real tree. 🙂

  • Mia- MakeMeUpMia

It looks so good, everything you guys have done has been amazing!

Oh, I just love those chairs!!! They are perfect for the space!

  • We have been on the lookout for a couple similar chairs, and I think I’m going to order these! So good to hear that they’re comfy and a GREAT price, too! Love how the room turned out!!

    • I really think that you’d love these! You can order them from several different places, but Overstock was the only place that had this specific color (Sand – it’s basically a light linen color). Let me know what you decide!

  • your house is seriously gorgeous. the loveseat is the perfect middle in between the two rooms. not gonna lie, if i had a room like this with that gorgeous window, i’d turn it into a library. KC hates natural light (heats up the house and the glare on TV/computer) so it would be ALL MINE. lol

    • It would make the perfect library room, you’re so right! We are going to build a faux fireplace for in there to up the coziness factor, so then I’m sure I’ll be reading in there all the time. KC cracks me up for his reasons of hating natural light, lol.

  • This turned out so, SO good, lady! Congrats!
