Happy Monday! This weekend can be summed up in one word – snow! Talk about an instant boost to get in the holiday spirit. You know what else currently fills my heart with holiday cheer? Our neutral Christmas sitting room! What used to be the most-despised room in the house (you can check out my previous design ideas here and here) quickly has turned into my favorite spot to open a book and curl up with Finn.
Let’s take a quick look at the before situation of this room. As you already know, our front sitting room is one large room that opens to our dining room. So, the sitting room area is the area up by the big window.
It cracks me up to look back at these photos of right after we moved in. Talk about crap everywhere! As you can see, this room was much of the same as the rest of the house – sterile semi-gloss walls, dark trim, carpet, etc.
And, here it is today – painted, new furniture, and ready for Christmas!
Oh, paint and new floors – how I love, thee.
The layout of this room really had me stumped for a long time. We toyed around with the idea of having all chairs, and then we changed our minds to include a loveseat instead. I quickly realized that where I originally thought I wanted the loveseat wasn’t going to work. I spent a good week or so moving the furniture into different configurations until I came up with one that I liked best.
Our big front window always has been my favorite feature of the room, so I wanted to place the loveseat opposite so you can see out. Plus, the loveseat now also acts as a visual space divider between the sitting room and dining room. We have nothing but good things to say about the IKEA Ektorp slipcover loveseat. Yes, it can be challenging to not be OCD about keeping the cover clean, especially since that’s Finn’s favorite spot. But, hey – at least I can just pop off the cover and wash it when I want instead of trying to spot clean it.
So many of you commented on our chairs when I shared our new room inspiration. For the price, I was a tad skeptical about how comfortable they would be and the quality. Well, we were blown away and absolutely love these chairs! They are so, so comfortable, and the included pillow helps add some back support. (I’ll probably switch those out in the future).
My favorite decor piece in the room is the botanical watercolor print that I balanced with two small vases from Magnolia Market. The kind folks at Minted gifted the watercolor print to us, and it’s special to have such a unique piece in this space. I’m not typically an art person, but the muted colors and pattern of this print fit in perfectly with our decor. I added the distressed french farmhouse frame to it, which only helps tie it in with the rest of our house. It’s a work of art that I will forever cherish!
Once the Christmas decor gets packed away, there’s still quite a few elements I’d like to add to this room. We’re going back and forth on adding a sofa table behind the loveseat, I want to find a different lamp (the one in there now was what we had in the basement), and the walls still need a few more pieces. But for now, I love the calm and tranquility that the room brings.
